We accumulate a lot of software and hardware over time. In this article we’re going to give you 4 reasons to inventory your assets. While this isn’t exhaustive, it’ll give you some places to start.
1. Knowing what you have: This helps you understand your attack surface and ways you can defend it. It will also help you to just know what your infrastructure looks like which is helpful when troubleshooting.
2. Detect unauthorized devices/software: By monitoring what technology you have, you can detect devices and software that users don’t have permission to use. By removing them, you’re reducing risk.
3. Disaster recovery: If something fails, having access to your inventory list makes the restoration process easier.
4. Vulnerability management: Knowing what devices and applications are out of date, misconfigured, or end of life, can help you patch/update what needs to be fixed or it can help you decide what machines or software needs decommissioning.
These reasons for inventorying hardware and software is also applicable to your personal stuff, not just business.
