We Are Creatures of Habit

We are creatures of habit. Maybe you want to get better at writing, so you develop a habit of writing for a half hour at night. Maybe you want to feel less stresses, so you get into the habit of meditating a few minutes a day to start.

When it comes to information security and OSINT, habits are, like anything else, good or bad.

Some of the habits we need to change:

  • While passwords are still a thing, we need to break the habit of using the same one for every account. If someone ever figures one password out, they have access to all of your accounts.
  • With the case work we’ve done for attorneys, the best course of action is to leave an argument online before it starts. We’ve seen people get dinged for tens of thousands of dollars because things escalated and then suddenly they find themselves as a named party in a lawsuit.
  • Small business owners need to shift the habit of thinking that “Why would someone want our data?” and get into the habit of learning ways someone could harm their business. Malicious stuff aside, as businesses (not all) rely on cloud based services and other online platforms like social media, those entities can, and do, experience outages. For the small business, it’s getting into the habit of assessing risk to your organization.
